GPO TELEPHONE OPERATORS HEAD SET, 1950's

Headset used by manual switchboard operators.

Your comments:

  • I was a GPO telephonist at Telephone House, Birmingham from 1949 until the early '50's. How I loved these headsets. We operators each had our own, which we would recognize by the black disc on the cord connecting the headset to the breastplate. This disc displayed the number of the headset for identification.
After all these years I still remember my number which was 419! This number was also used for clocking in and out.
In later years I returned to what was now BT. I was issued a light plastic headset with the mouthpiece attached. I disliked it intensely! How I would have LOVED my old '419' headset. It was irreplaceable.

  • I am an avid collector of switchboard headsets and breast horn microphones. I would have liked to have worked on a working switchboard, possibly during a night shift.
