WWII ASTRO COMPASS Mk 2

Compass for direction using astronomical bodies such as stars. It was particularly useful when flying near the polar regions, where magnetic compasses could be unreliable. See also Mk1X AM Bubble Sextant Item A1600

  • This was used in dead reckoning navigation in heavy bombers such as the Avro Lancaster during WW2. These are only accurate when set up absolutely level, it's beyond me how they achieved this in an aircraft. It is little wonder that we missed the target by miles until the advent of on-board radar and the Pathfinders!

  • I believe this is a fail safe item in case of confirmation of route

I had one and used it quite of as I moved to different locations in the UK. Sold it in approx 1983
