Used in the trenches during WW1 to warn of a 'Gas Attack'.
Also a popular tool for football fans at games to rouse a noise.

  • We have a similar rattle which is stamped R.C.D. 1944. A football supporter has painted it in yellow and red. It has the same shaped handle as the one you show on your site...... very interesting, thank you. The rattle was found in the North West of Birmingham.

  • These gas rattles were also used post WWI by O.T.C.'s to represent the sound of machine gun fire when on exercise.
