HILGER SPECTROMETER, 1960's

A spectrometer is an optical instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically used in spectroscopic analysis to identify materials. The variable measured is most often the light's intensity but could also, for instance, be the polarization state. This equipment uses the 'Spekker' Principal, a Registered Trade Mark.

  • I used an instrument like this daily when I worked as a chemist at the Lanarkshire Steel Company in Motherwell.
It was used routinely for the colourometric determination of alloying metals in steel and raw materials. Eg Cu, Ni, Cr, Si and others.
It measured the absorption of a solution at a specific wavelength the absorption being proportionate to the concentration of the element. Modern equivalent would be a UV/Vis spectrometer Eg ThermoFisher UV/Vis range.
